    What the numbers mean

    Word count is the one most people need, usually because an assignment sets a limit. Check whether yours counts the title, the reference list, and any quotations, because departments differ and this tool cannot know your rules.

    Keyword density matters mainly for web writing, where repeating a term too often reads badly to a person and adds nothing for a search engine. If a single term is above roughly three percent of your text, it is worth reading that passage aloud.

    Counting words is not the same as checking whether they are yours. If you need to know that a document is original, that requires comparing it against sources, which is a different job. Plagiarism Checker X does that on your own machine.

    How do you count words?

    Words are counted by splitting your text on spaces and line breaks, which is how word processors do it. A hyphenated word like "well-known" counts once, and a number counts as a word.

    Does this tool store what I paste?

    No. The counting happens in your browser using JavaScript, so the text never reaches a server. Closing the tab discards it.

    How is reading time calculated?

    Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time assumes 130, which are common averages for silent reading and speech. Your own pace will differ, so treat both as estimates.

    Why does my word count differ from Microsoft Word?

    Small differences are normal. Tools disagree on edge cases such as hyphenated compounds, numbers, and text inside footnotes or captions. A gap of a few words on a long document is expected.
