Your license key could be for an older version, meaning that it would not be compatible with the latest version that you are operating on your device.
It is unlikely but possible for a license key to be disabled or blocked. Some of the reasons for that include malicious or unwarranted use.
License keys have a set amount of users that can use them. The Professional license allows for 1 user per and the Business license allows 5 users. Meaning that if the users are exceeded then the license key will not work such as using the key on extra devices that are not allowed.
The release date of the software version being used could be outside of the time bracket of the maintenance plan that was purchased with the license key. License keys only work with all software updates that are released within the maintenance plan period.
